South Ward SID Makes Business Development, Quality of Life Improvements Top Priorities

From supplemental streetscape services to initiatives to create jobs, investment and new business development in Newark’s South Ward, the Bergen/Lyons/Clinton Partnership, known locally as the South Ward SID, is moving ahead with a wide range of programs that are catching the eye of local residents, business and property owners. The South Ward SID is a public/private partnership between the City of Newark and local stakeholders focused on generating economic activity and community development.

The Partnership’s Executive Director, Ronice Bruce, is overseeing a proactive plan to achieve the organization’s goals and objectives and believes the district has considerable interest and appeal beyond the Brick City as well, pointing to world-class healthcare services provided by the neighborhood’s Beth Israel Medical Center and other leading businesses nearby.

“This is an exciting time for the City of Newark, Bruce noted. “As we embark upon new ventures and enhance old infrastructures in the South Ward and throughout the City, I hope to use my experience in developing, building, and sustaining collaborative relationships with businesses, community organizations, entrepreneurs, religious and municipal leaders to benefit the needs of the people who live, work, learn and invest in our district.”

Bruce, a Newark-native and Rutgers alum, has built a professional career built on getting things done, including stints as Manager, Executive & Global Communications for Verizon, Director of Development for the Robert Wood Johnson Hospital Foundation and Senior Business Resource Development Specialist for the Newark Workforce Investment Board.

This spring, the South Ward SID held interviews for positions with the district’s Clean Team, directed by Commercial District Services, one of the state’s leading streetscape management firms. Several South Ward residents were hired and are currently contributing to supplemental programs in support of garbage collection by the City of Newark’s Department of Sanitation, as well as the removal of graffiti, stickers, flyers and more that detract from a clean, safe and welcoming atmosphere.

The South Ward SID is also developing its communications capabilities to provide a consistent and professional marketing program that helps tell the story about all that the district has to offer. That includes the creation of a new Facebook page, a website currently in development and promotional materials that will be produced in the months ahead.

Phillip Gilmore, Pastor of St John’s Community Baptist Church on Bergen Street and President of the Partnership’s Board of Directors, said ultimately the SID, including its volunteer members and professional staff, are dedicated to the mission of enhancing and sustaining the South Ward as a destination of choice in Newark and the region as a place to invest, live, shop, work, play, worship, and access quality health care.
