Food for Thought: The Path to Food Security in Newark
Thanks to the members of our South Ward community for participating in and contributing to the Community Conversation gathering to see Food for Thought, a documentary about the path to food security in Newark, NJ. The event was hosted by Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and the South Ward SID at St. John’s Community Baptist Church on Bergen Street.
The documentary was a collaborative effort spearheaded by RWJBarnabas Health, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and The Greater Newark Community Advisory Board, who worked with community-based partner organizations from all five wards of the city. Citizen Journalists representing Newark youth and young adults between the ages of 12 and 21, helped create the film to raise awareness of food insecurity, food security, and how these issues are interrelated with community health and well-being in Newark.

Phillip Gilmore, Pastor of St. John’s Community Baptist Church and President of the South Ward SID, was one of many community leaders and representatives featured in the film. Access to healthcare, including programs, services and information about better nutrition, is a key component of the SID’s mission.
