The South Ward Special Improvement District (SID), which is bisected by I-78, serves a U-shaped corridor which includes Bergen Street between Lyons and Clinton Avenues and both of those streets to the Irvington border. Created by municipal ordinance in 2013 and funded by an assessment on commercial properties located within the district’s boundaries, it is led by the BLCSID Partnership, Inc., a non-profit corporation formed to manage the SID.

Known locally as the South Ward SID, the BLCSID, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, was established to help the area compete, improve and sustain commercial viability.  A public/private partnership between the City of Newark, local business and commercial property owners and residents, the SID is focused on generating economic activity and community development.

The South Ward SID provides a wide range of services including supplemental streetscape cleaning (removal of trash, graffiti, flyers, stickers, sidewalk and curb sweeping, etc.), economic development programs to spur investment and new business ownership, as well as community development and quality of life initiatives that benefit the district’s residents, business owners and employees as well as visitors to the district.
